Club Brugge manager, Nicky Hayen has defended Raphael Onyedika after the Nigerian was sent off in the club’s UEFA Europa Conference League clash with Fiorentina on Thursday night.

The Belgian Pro League side lost the semi-final first leg encounter 3-2.

Onyedika was first booked after 58 minutes, before he was sent off three minutes later.

“The player himself ( Onyedika ) did not know that he already had yellow and you could see from his reaction that he was surprised,” Hayen told the club’s official website.

” He did not know that he already had yellow and I will also defend him in that regard. He is something in that respect more intelligent and otherwise he would not have used that tackle in that way.

“It shows the aggressiveness of the team and that we do not want to give away any gifts and that is why I say it was unfortunate.”

The 23-year-old will miss the reverse fixture next week Thursday at the Jay Breydelstadion.
