Serie A: Referee’s Decision To Award Osimhen Penalty On Point –Marelli

Former Serie A referee Luca Marelli has backed the decision of Maurizio Mariani to have awarded Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen a penalty against Juventus in Sunday’s Serie A game.

Recall that Mariani, who was the centre referee had awarded the Nigerian international a penalty for a tackle inside Juve’s 18-yard box after a thorough VAR check.

There were suggestions that the contact on Osimhen was minimal, however, Marellin in a chat with Tuttojuve, insisted that it was obvious his ankle was clipped by Juventus’s Joseph Nonge.

“We focus on the penalty that decides the match. Osimhen controls the ball between two players: Nonge ‘s intervention is not immediately noticeable, but it is there and it is clear on the Napoli striker’s ankle,” Mariani said on DAZN via Tuttojuve.

“It’s right to go and review the action. There are no doubts about the penalty and the yellow card for the Juventus player.”

Although Osimhen’s penalty was saved by goalkeeper Szczesny, Giacomo Raspadori swiftly capitalized on the rebound and scored in the 88th minute.

The match saw Napoli clinch a 2-1 victory over Juventus at the Diego Maradona Stadium over the weekend.
