Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi has promised to keep the state workforce happy within available resources by prioritizing their welfare to boost their morale and productivity in the service of their father land.

The Governor made the pledge in his speech to mark the 2024 International Workers Day celebration held at the Muhammadu Buhari’s Civic Centre, on Wednesday in Lokoja.

He said that his government had also accorded recognition to Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kogi by appointing its immediate past Chairman Comr. Onu Edoka as a Special Adviser on Labour matters.

“We will not relent in the implementation of policies that will promote the well-being of the workforce”, he said, adding that negotiation on a new minimum wage was ongoing and would soon be concluded.

Earlier in his speech, Comrade Gabriel Amari, Kogi State Chairman of the NLC reiterated the stance of the Organized Labour that the current N30, 000 National Minimum Wage was a far cry from what the basic take home should be.

The current Minimum Wage was grossly inadequate and fell way far short of meeting the basic needs of workers in the face of the prevailing economic situation in the country.

Amari called for urgent adjustment to the state Minimum Wage in view of the astronomical rise in the costs of goods and services, which has continued to erode the purchasing power of Workers.

The Kogi NLC Chairman also drew the attention of Governor Usman Ododo the upsurge in security challenges in the State saying, “The issue of insecurity in Nigeria is a recurring concern.”

“The country faces security challenges that not only threaten its stability but also have a huge impact on the productivity of Workers.

“The constant threats of violence, kidnappings, and extortion deter both local and international investors, resulting in a decline in job opportunities, hindering business growth, and limiting economic progress”, he added.
