Top members of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are rooting for an expatriate to succeed Jose Peseiro as head coach of the Super Eagles, reports Completesports.com.

Peseiro left the position following the expiration of his contract in February.

A number of local and foreign coaches have already applied for the top job.

The NFF has reportedly shortlisted seven coaches for the position and are expected to name the successful candidate before the end of this month.

“I won’t say the NFF is divided over hiring a foreign or local coach for the Super Eagles. The truth is most board members and those in technical committee want another expatriate to take charge of the Super Eagles,” a reliable source in football source told Completesports.com.

“The NFF know the importance of qualifying for the World Cup after missing out the last time in Qatar. They don’t want to gamble by making a wrong choice especially after the Super Eagles poor start to the qualifiers.

“We are likely to see another foreigner take over from Jose Peseiro, that I can authoritatively reveal at this moment.”

The Super Eagles next engagement is a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matchday three tie against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

The encounter will hold at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo on Friday, June 7.

The three-time African champions will also take on the Squirrels of Benin at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan few days later.
