The English football leagues have been strict in enforcing the profitability and sustainability rules, as evidenced by recent points deductions handed out to clubs.
Sheffield United is the most recent club to receive a two-point deduction, which will come into effect in the next season they participate in the EFL. If they drop into the Championship, they will begin next season minus two points.
An independent disciplinary commission issued this punishment for the 2022/23 season, during which the club defaulted on payments to other teams.
The EFL confirmed the decision on its official website, stating that Sheffield United had agreed to pay £310,455. The suspended points will be activated if the club fails to make any payment. The club had defaulted on payments to other clubs for a total of more than 550 days.
Sheffield United is the third Premier League team to be punished for failing to meet the profitability and sustainability rules. Everton were initially given a 10-point deduction for breaching the PSR, which was reduced to six on appeal.
However, they were recently given a further two-point penalty. Nottingham Forest also received a four-point deduction, and there is a possibility that Championship leaders Leicester could receive a six-point deduction next season for alleged financial rule violations.
